Our little elephant on parade...

Our Halloween was pretty tame this year. And by that, I mean it lasted about 20 minutes. On Friday, Ben's school had a Halloween parade through the courtyard, which was adorable. Then on Saturday, my friend Hannah set up this cute hay bale, pumpkin display and took pictures of the neighborhood kids. Ben was pretty grumpy during his photo shoot so I subjected him to a second one in our front yard as punishment.

"Nooo! You guys are going to make me look dumb!"

This is no good!

Alrighhhht, I'll play along.

Yay!!

Cheese!

I can only assume he's remembering once forgotten travels and adventures during his days with the French Foreign Legion. I mean, that's what his expression tells me.

Tyra would say this is too posed.

Better.
Wait.... how come those kids don't have to ride around on matching animals?

Hmpf!

"Daddy, you're soooo funny!"

"So remember when you guys offered to pay for college or therapy? That offer's still good, right?"

ed: This is hilarious, you can't tell but Ben is watching our neighbor Chrissy, bring her dog across the street. He's a Chiauaha dressed in a pumpkin suit. I'd post a picture but the Lynchpins and Needles standards board would ultimately make me take it down.

The disbelief grows..

"I'm outta here."

It's been, like, a decade.

I was flipping through our DVR list this morning looking for some Hi-5 or Backyardigans since Noggin seems to believe that anyone could possibly want to watch Pinky Dinky Doo and I came across several DVR'd hours of the 80's music channel and I burst out laughing. On one hand I would say that it's kind of pathetic that this is what our lives have come to, instead of a real live honky tonk we have to create our own dance party in our living room and we DVR it because in order to fully appreciate Lionel Ritchie's Dancing on the Ceiling it needs to be played twice. But you know what- we've been like this for years, some of you may remember Dance Party USA, May 15, 2003 when we may have drunk dialed you and reminded you to save the date for our wedding a year from then. Did we mention we were sorry? Anyway, scanning the DVR list just reminded me of how much I love Kristopher and how much fun we've had together for the last ten years. So in honor of that and with apologies to Eric Church, I've reworked a song for him.

You can watch the video and read along with the words. Or don't, whatevs. This one's for the hubs.

I love sleepin in on Saturdays
And I love college football games
I love pullin out my grays
And good jazzercise

Yeah, I’m a fan of Flannery Connor books
And anything Greg Malley cooks
Chicago Bears have got me hooked on Sunday afternoons

Yes I love good cold beer
And by that I mean Bud Ice
I love a good loud honky tonk
It rocks on Friday nights

And hell yes I love my truck
But I want you to know
Honey, I love your love the most

Man, I love how Marlboros taste
Damn, I love the USA
Any show on Bravo TV
Is television at its best

And yes I love good cold beer
And by that I mean High Life
I love living room dance parties
That rock out Friday nights

Hell yes, I love the lake but I want you to know
Honey, I love your love the most

I love seersucker, monograms
And anything pink and green
A good tailgate and JoePa
and pistachio ice cream
Hell yes, I love my dogs
And SoCo in Diet Coke

But honey I love your love
Yeah I love your love

I love your love the most

Find your happy place.

So let me first begin by apologizing for the general suckiness of the blog lately. First, it's Kris' fault. Not really. YES Really. He dropped our laptop and the hard drive won't engage now and it has trapped indefinitely all of the good videos and pictures I was planning to post on the blog, the secondary effects of which have left me creatively paralyzed. Thaaawump bump bump. (Sound of dear husband being laid out under the bus.) Secondly, since April we have had a major life event/ trip that has wrecked my month and just thrown our whole schedule off track, forcing chaos and ensuing exhaustion upon our household. And these were good things!
April- Baptism/Easter, visits from Grandmas
May- Deep Creek Lake, MD
June- Outer Banks Family Vacation
July- trip to Nisswa, Minnesota (family lakehouse also known as the Ramer Free Motel- not because it's been rid of Ramers, but because my great-grandmother Ramer never charged anyone when they monopolized her guest house. Although once she got mad at my uncle and wouldn't even let him sleep in the bunk house and insisted he sleep in the yard and somebody pointed out that because of the bears he should at least be allowed to sleep in the toolshed. He was 13. The veracity of this story should be investigated but I believe it's true only because when my mother was 6 she came to the dinner table (at the lakehouse) wearing pigtails and Grandede lost her shit and told her how inappropriate that was and made her cry and didn't give her dinner.) You know , Germans.
August- Sorority Reunion
September- Seattle trip for Kelli and Brett's wedding and major Lynch family fun with the Huentelman's and the Petisses/ Peti.

Really nothing to complain about- good times all around. But it makes for cheap blogging- here are some pictures of Ben- aren't you satisfied?? Not a lot of sharing. So hold onto your pants because I'm about to SHARE. And even better than that I'm taking you to my happy place. Since July whenever I find myself overwhelmed, sad or exhausted, I go away in my mind, to Wenona Illinois. Mind you, I have only spent about 1.5 hours of my entire life in Wenona, Illinois but it's the place of dreams. We stopped in this sweet little haven after hour 10 in a 24 hour return trip from Minnesota at the end of July. We needed somewhere that we could sit down, eat and feed Ben.
I'm a prairie girl. As we rolled through Illinois tearing through miles of concrete, I look out the windows and sigh loudly and continuously utter exhortations of the enormity of the sky and the vast openness and isn't it so freeing? We stopped around sunset, orange and reds blazing across the sky, and I marvelled at the emerald grass and the corn two feet higher than my head, considered the six feet of topsoil under my feet and just stared up at all that sky. I always feel like if you were to hold up a model of the earth we'd be right there right on top of the world. Stretching your arms out it's as if you could embrace the entire sky, your heart pounding with the endless possibility it could burst right out of your chest soaring straight to the stars. (Oh god, am I quoting a Meatloaf song?) There's nothing higher than you than the corn -save the for the Pizza Hut directly behind you- it's you and the sky.
So this is the happy place, right? The limitless possibility of big skies and freedom?
Nope, because the happy place involves a time and it's the four days that encompass Wenona Days explained to us by our placemats. The itinerary of Wenona Days is a breathtaking display of wholesome goodness and fun that is not possibly experienced anywhere else in America, and I'm not kidding- my hometown hosts America's only Cardboard Cup Regatta. So you know Wenona Days is good. I retype it here for you, - (read every word) I kid you not, all of this is for real. I've highlighted in bold my favorites.

While we're on the subject...

In reference to Clamatos-see below- here's a handy recipe presented by Rocky. You will also see what happens when Mel has a few too many, And gain an insight into the night life at the Lynch Family Vacation Home in the Outer Banks- this is from the old house. But as a bonus feature you get to see Jeremy and Sarah who missed this year!

Umm, Aunt Missy can Ava have her tutu back?

Ben that's Jeff, Jeff Bauer.

Tutu!

You know it's a good party when it ends and you're covered in tulle and Dairy Queen Ice Cream cake- Ava's a party baby.

Wait- I was wrong- a good party also requires a crown.

And Geoff making a Geofface.

If a problem comes along...

You must whip it! Here's baby Devo in action. He does this by himself, I swear. It had not occured to me how similar the red bucket is to a Devo hat, that's how much cooler he is than me.
